Mastering Self-Defense Moves
There is much said about the number of different moves in self-defense. Some martial areas offer training in complex and numerous combinations for different scenarios. Some systems are built for certain body types. At Fuzion, we focus our self-defense on applicability for anyone and on quality through mastery. As such, the value we find in our Karate system truly harnesses the basics of karate-do as a foundation from which we build. For example, there specific self-defense moves that can be mastered to help protect oneself in dangerous situations by just about anyone. Here are three self-defense moves we would teach. We caution that these are not for playing around with. None of these examples should be practiced without first learning through proper instruction in a safe and supervised area. Failure to do so could cause severe harm (or worse) to yourself or training partner.
Knee Strike – A knee strike can be used to strike an attacker’s groin or abdomen. Begin by stepping forward with your dominant leg and pulling your opponent towards you with your arms. Next, lift your knee and strike with the top of your knee. Make sure to keep your back straight when executing this move.
Escaping a Grab – When an attacker grabs you, there are a few ways to escape. One is to step forward with one leg and pivot your body, using your other arm to strike the attacker in the face. Another is to grab the attacker’s hand with both of your hands and forcefully twist, causing them to release their grip.
Elbow Strike – An elbow strike can be used to strike an attacker in close range. Begin by bringing your arm up in front of your face in a protective position. Then, pivot on your back foot while bringing your elbow down to strike the attacker.
Remember, the key to self-defense is to be aware of your surroundings and avoid dangerous situations. However, if you do find yourself in a dangerous situation, mastering these (or similar) self-defense moves can help you stay safe. The only way to master these moves and many others is through repeated practice, strength building, and pressure test training. Fuzion Martial Arts focuses our attention on building our students to protect themselves, feel confidence and build skills for successful lives.
